Possum Kingdom Firework Show

It’s hard to believe that the Fourth of July is just around the corner. Here at Possum Kingdom Lake, we love to make our celebrations big! Unfortunately, due to social distancing protocols, the YMCA Camp Grady Spruce will not be open to the public for the 2020 Possum Kingdom Firework Show.

However, the show will go on July 4, 2020, and everyone is encouraged to find a viewing spot from the lake or their home. One of our favorite places to view the Possum Kingdom Firework Show is from our boat near Hell’s Gate.

With so many firework shows and cook-outs to attend in the days leading up to the holiday, I wanted to take a minute to share my yearly reminder of fireworks safety. While our celebrations may be looking a little different because of social distancing orders, there are still ways to have fun and stay safe.

Safety Viewing Tips for Firework Shows

  • Safely distance yourself from others and be sure to wear your masks in public. While it’s uncomfortable, we need to think of those we’re protecting.
  • Although rare, a firework component might fall to the ground unexploded. If you find any, do not touch it – immediately contact the local fire or police department.
  • Fireworks can scare our pets, be sure to leave your pets at home.
  • – Leave your own fireworks at home. Sparklers, fountains, and other items that many states allow for private use are not appropriate to use when a large crowd is present.

Safety Tips for Shooting Fireworks at Home

  • Only purchase fireworks only from licensed outlets. Follow package directions—store fireworks in a dry, cool place.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. If you’ve been drinking during the day, please let someone else handle the sparklers.
  •  Never allow young children to play with fireworks, not even sparklers. Older children should only be permitted to use fireworks under close adult supervision. Do not allow any running or horseplay.
  • Light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from houses, dry foliage, and flammable materials. Keep a bucket of water nearby. Keep unused fireworks away from firing areas.
  • Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then throwing them in the garbage.
